The difference, in one question
A calendar can't answer that: it shows boxes, and you do the counting. A resource engine can — because it knows what you own, how many, and what's already taken. It's the only difference that matters, and all the others follow from it.
What you get
A resource is anything limited and bookable: a horse, a bike, a car, a kayak, a room, equipment, a guide. Nothing in the engine knows the vocabulary of any trade — a paddleboard hire business creates an inventory, and it just works.
An open season, specific dates, or both, with exceptions either way. Everything is resolved by the same stack of rules — and when two rules contradict each other, the one that doesn't sell wins.
The check happens in the database, under a lock — never in the browser. Two customers asking for the last place at the same moment get one booking between them, not two.
Customer records, history, export and erasure, wired into WordPress's own tools. Erasing doesn't delete bookings: what identifies a person goes, what proves the takings stays.
“Cancel booking VX-4821” tells you nothing. Ours names what it frees up: two places on Saturday's ride, and Bijou. A confirmation nobody reads protects no one.
Your customers pay for their place by card when they book, with Stripe: the payment goes through your WooCommerce shop, and the money comes to you. Without WooCommerce, places can still be booked and you take payment on site.
The inventory
That's the real situation of a hire business, every single day. Here's how the engine keeps track of it.
Everything you have in limited numbers, counted in one place: a place, a bike, a mount. By quantity — “twelve places”, “twenty bikes” — and the engine counts. Or by named unit — “Bijou”, “Bike No. 018” — and the engine names, each unit with its own maintenance and history.
Bijou is lame: three days off, and he's no longer offered. He isn't deleted — he comes back, with his whole history.
Slots that can no longer be fulfilled disappear from the public site. You don't remove them by hand: you shouldn't have had to think about it.

Nothing locks and nothing is deleted. You go back to the Free edition, which stays usable for life. Bookings already taken stay, your customers stay, your inventory stays — only the Plus edition's features stop being available.
Yes, with the Plus edition: your customers pay for their place by card when they book, with Stripe, through your WooCommerce shop. Without WooCommerce, places can still be booked and you take payment on site.
Yes, with the Plus edition: as many inventories as you like, each by quantity or by named units. A riding centre can track its horses by name, its helmets by quantity and its rooms by name, all in the same calendar.
You declare the closure, and the message tells you how many bookings fall within it before you confirm. Closing doesn't cancel anything on its own: you see what it affects, then you decide.
Export and erasure go through WordPress's built-in tools. An erasure request removes what identifies the person and keeps the booking in anonymised form: that's what the law requires, since takings must remain provable.
